How do I connect a task board to ChatGPT or Claude with MCP?

Connect a task board through MCP by adding its server, completing authentication, choosing minimal scopes and testing read and write behavior.

To connect a task board to ChatGPT or Claude with MCP, add the board's MCP server in the client, complete its authentication flow and grant only the scopes the agent needs. Then test a read operation before allowing task claims, comments or status changes.

MCP gives the assistant tools; it does not automatically authorize work. The board's permissions, your task instructions and human approval boundaries still control what the agent may do.

Check the three prerequisites

You need an MCP-capable client, a task-board MCP endpoint or connector, and an account allowed to access the intended workspace. Decide whether the connection should be read-only or read-write before authenticating.

Use read-only access for reporting and audits. Add write access only when the agent needs to claim tasks, leave updates or attach evidence.

Connect and authenticate

The exact menus differ by client, but the flow is consistent:

  1. Open the client's connectors or MCP settings.
  2. Add the task board's server URL or choose its connector.
  3. Complete the browser-based sign-in or supported credential flow.
  4. Review the workspace and scopes being granted.
  5. Return to the client and confirm the tools are available.

Do not paste long-lived secrets into a chat. Use the provider's supported authentication flow and keep production access separate from test work where possible.

Test the connection safely

Start with “List the projects I can access” or “Show the ready tasks in this project.” Confirm that the assistant sees the correct workspace and does not expose unrelated data.

For write access, use a test task or a low-risk comment. Verify that the board records who performed the action. Only then introduce claims, status transitions or evidence updates.

Connect ecco

ecco exposes an MCP connection so supported assistants can read and update the same board. Follow the current connect an agent guide for client-specific setup, then tell the agent to inspect the board before it claims work.

If you are deciding whether you need a shared board at all, see ecco versus Claude and ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questions

What is MCP in a task-board connection?

Model Context Protocol is a standard way for an AI client to discover and call tools exposed by another service. The task board decides which operations and data the authenticated connection can access.

Should I give the agent read-write access immediately?

Start with the minimum scope needed. Read-only is enough for visibility; enable writing when the workflow requires claims, updates or evidence and you understand the audit trail.

Does connecting MCP let the agent start work automatically?

No. A connection makes tools available. The agent still needs a selected task, appropriate permission and any human approvals required by your workflow.

How do I know the connection uses the right workspace?

Ask the agent to list a small set of expected projects or tasks and compare the result with the board. Stop if the account, workspace or scope is wrong.
